Whether you are looking for a fun and sporty compact car, or an efficient and affordable compact car, you must research various car brands. However, with the Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic, this is not the case. These two models from Honda and Hyundai give you the best of both worlds. The Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic are highly fuel-efficient sedans with impressive technologies, excellent cabin comforts, strong performance, and high safety ratings.
The Honda Civic features a wide-angle rearview camera and a clever side-view camera, which shows the driver a blind-spot region. It also comes with the Honda Sensing system, which bundles adaptive forward-collision warnings and adaptive cruise control. Automatic braking is optional.
The Hyundai Elantra has a rearview camera. However, an advanced-safety technology bundle is available only on the costly Limited version. It includes forward-collision warnings together with automatic emergency braking. It also includes the following; active lane control, lane-departure warning, blind-spot detection, and adaptive cruise control.
The Honda Civic features a 160-watt sound system, a USB port, an electronic parking brake, and climate control. It also has a leather seats, 17-inch tire size wheels, heated rear and front seats, more audio choices, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen.
The Hyundai Elantra features cruise control, 15-inch Hyundai Elantra tire size wheels, six-speaker audio system, and a six-way adjustable driver seat. Other features include a navigation system, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB ports, automatic climate control, a fold/split rear seat, memory seats, ventilated and heated front seats, automatic transmission, premium audio, and Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics package.
The Honda Civic boasts an expansive cabin. It has 6-feet of space at the back and plenty of clever storage solutions. An impressive attribute about this car is the fact that front seats begin extremely low to the floor. Nonetheless, they’re height-adjustable. At the back, it provides ample leg and head room for those over 6-foot tall to relax. In fact, there’s an inch of knee room for one to spare. Storage is not only ample but also thoughtful.
The Hyundai Elantra also takes pride in its generous interior space when it comes to this segment. It has plenty of shoulder, leg, and head space. Its front seats are more bolstered and firmer. The only downside is the fact that the back seats sit higher and are less grippy. Even with its optional sunroof, knee and head room are still great for adult riders. You can store small items in the console or doors.
Basic Civic models feature unexciting, linear handling and acceleration. Turbo Civic models on the other hand boast more power. Additionally, they’re exceptionally smooth to ride. Standard Civics bring with them a 158-horsepower, 2.0liter 4-cylinder with 6-speed manual gearbox. The rest have a more efficient CVT (continuously variable transmission) that the EPA rates at 41mpg highway, 31 mpg city, and 35 mpg combined. The EX-T with CVT provides an almost similar fuel economy on top of a more lively performance. It boasts a much-improved ride as well as tauter handling. The turbo versions have better suspension tuning and tires to deliver an incredibly compliant and composed ride quality.
The standard Elantras feature a 2.0liter, 4-cylinder that’s rated at 147 hp. The EPA rates it at 29/38/33 mpg in base form. This is a bit less when it comes to the Elantra Limited. Most of them have an optional 6-speed automatic transmission although the base model features a 6-speed manual gearbox. The new Hyundai Elantra boasts a 128-hp turbocharged with a 1.4-liter inline-4 that’s coupled with a 7- speed dual-clutch transmission. This gives it a rough EPA rating of 35mpg combined.
In terms of performance, the Hyundai Elantra is an average performer. Nonetheless, it provides a highly composed driving experience in the class for sure. The car accelerates evenly although its shifts are tailored to maximize fuel economy but not speed.
So what’s the bottom line when it comes to this battle of titans? The Honda Civic is an excellent midsize car that’s best experienced as the fully equipped Touring model. It comes close to offering the space of the higher-priced family sedans, with perfect handling and ride. The Hyundai Elantra on the other hand does brilliantly in near-base trim.
Clearly, the winner is the Honda Civic all factors remaining constant.
